Toronto – The Smart Commute Association and Waterloo-based CarpoolTool.com have joined forces to build a state-of-the-art carpool matching service for commuters in the Greater Toronto Area and Hamilton.
The carpool matching service, currently in development and due to launch this November, will serve a 250 km radius from downtown Toronto across the Greater Golden Horseshoe. The system consists of an accurate and up-to-date search engine and will be available at www.smartcommute.ca. In the months following the launch, the matching service, funded by the Transport Canada’s Urban Transportation Showcase Program, will also work in different languages such as Chinese.
“We are very excited about this new partnership with CarpoolTool,” said Ryan Lanyon, deputy executive director of Smart Commute and the project manager for the carpool service. “Over the summer, we received numerous responses to our call for proposals from across North America and even Europe. We were most impressed by CarpoolTool’s proposal. We’re confident that this user-friendly tool will help us reach our goal of reducing the number of cars on the road.”
It is expected that the carpool service will receive up to 10,000 registrants in the first few months following the November launch. CarpoolTool is a product of Pathway Intelligence Inc., which specializes in producing web-based ridesharing platforms. Smart Commute’s new ridematching Web site will be built on Pathway Intelligence’s next-generation platform, which currently powers the Jack Bell Foundation’s Web site in British Columbia and numerous private corporate ridesharing sites.
