Want to get into the fast lane? Carpool Zone gets commuters into new HOV lanes

Toronto With the new HOV lanes on the 403 and 404, many commuters are asking themselves how they can take advantage of them. The Smart Commute Association has the answer: Carpool Zone.

Carpool Zone, the first Internet carpool service built for the Greater Toronto Area and Hamilton was launched recently at www.smartcommute.ca.   “The response we’ve received so far has been very positive. We have close to 1000 registrants since our launch just three weeks ago,” says Smart Commute Association Acting Executive Director, Ryan Lanyon. “Carpool Zone is really easy to use.  Commuters can find someone to carpool with in five easy steps.”

Commuters can register with Carpool Zone today at www.smartcommute.ca by filling out a simple questionnaire about their commute such as time, origin and destination.  Commuters can also add various preferences to help them find the right people to share their commute.  Preferences include specifying second languages spoken, smoking, music, and gender.  The system then searches the database to find the closest possible match by using precision mapping technology.  The system also has built-in privacy measures to ensure that personal information is confidential until both users confirm interest in forming their carpool.

Smart Commute is one of eight municipal projects funded under Transport Canada’s Urban Transportation Showcase Program – a five-year program created to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from transportation in Canadian cities.
