Commuters Challenged to Choose the Smarter Way: National Commuter Challenge is back in the Greater Toronto Area.

Toronto, Canada – If the smog isn’t choking you, what about the cost of gas?  This week marks the return of the annual Commuter Challenge – a national event that challenges commuters to try walking, cycling, carpooling, teleworking or taking transit to work instead of driving.

“We’re urging businesses and commuters in the GTA to sign-up now and try commuting in a new and environment-friendly way,” said Ryan Lanyon, project director for Smart Commute Association. “Not only is taking transit, cycling or carpooling better for your health, but with today’s gas prices, it’s also good for your wealth!”

Participating in the Commuter Challenge is easy.  Already a number of businesses and employers have signed up across the GTA including Dillon Consulting, Husky Injection Molding, Maple Lodge Farms, Environment Canada, Transport Canada and the Regions of York, Peel, Halton and Durham.  Still more boards of trade, chambers of commerce and municipalities have taken up the Challenge.

Businesses and individuals can click on to show that they chose the smarter way.  Commuters simply log on to the website and track how they got to work for the week of June 3-9.  After the Challenge, the total amount of pollution prevented and cars take off the road will be automatically calculated.

Over 38,000 Canadians took part in the Challenge last year instead of driving alone to work.  This resulted in the reduction of almost 900,000 kg of greenhouse gas emissions or 704 passenger vehicles not driven for a year!  Online registration is now available at

The Commuter Challenge is coordinated nationally by Go for Green, a non-profit, charitable organization encouraging Canadians to pursue healthy, outdoor physical activities that protect, enhance or restore the environment.  The Greater Toronto Area Commuter Challenge is supported by Smart Commute, with generous donations from VIA Rail Canada, Home Depot Canada, and Mountain Equipment Co-op.

Smart Commute is a partnership of the cities and regions of the Greater Toronto Area and Hamilton to tackle traffic congestion, climate change and air pollution through smarter commuting options.  Smart Commute has helped to remove almost 10,000 cars from GTA and Hamilton roads since 2004.
