Smart Commute celebrates ‘Bike to Work Day’: Events promoting cycling scheduled across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area

Toronto, Canada – Smart Commute and Metrolinx are working with employers across the region to encourage commuters to cycle to work this Friday for the second annual ‘Bike to Work Day’.  Cyclists will be greeted by local politicians with pancake breakfasts and skills clinics from Hamilton to Whitby to Newmarket.

Location: Gore Park (Corner of James and King), Hamilton

Description: There will be volunteer Ride Guides escorting people to the downtown area for their morning commute from predetermined areas. There will be a refreshment station and prizes. A bike maintenance booth will be at Gore Park all morning.  Go to for more details.

Description: City of Burlington employees will be taking part in a Bike to Work Day Challenge with fun events, like a “Bike Ride at Lunch” (12:00 to 1:30 pm) Department Challenge and prizes.  The event will promote cycling to work for all City employees and bring attention to installed bike lockers and wall racks.

Description: Smart Commute Mississauga and the Mississauga Cycling Advisory Committee invite all commuters for a group ride and pancake breakfast.

Employee group commutes will also be taking place at Hatch Ltd. (2800 Speakman Drive), Golder Associates offices (Argentia Road) and the Greater Toronto Airport Authority (3111 Convair Drive).

Description: A two-part event to encourage and reward employees to bike to work.  The first part will take place from 8:00 am to 10:00 am with a Bike to Work breakfast for staff, faculty and students.  The second part will take place from 11:30 am and 2:00 pm and will include a bike tune-up and a chance to win more prizes.  Powerstream employees will also be riding to work (161 Citiview Blvd., Vaughan).

Markham-Richmond Hill

Description: Smart Commute 404-7 Business Park Challenge: registration is between 7:45 and 8:15 am at 80 Commerce Valley Drive.  A police-escorted ride begins at 8:15 am and includes a water break and prize draw at 100 York Boulevard.  Ride ends at 80 Commerce Valley Drive at 9:15 am.

Description: A program of events as part of Canadian Environment Week will include demonstrations, prizes, and lunchtime bike workshops.

Smart Commute is a program of Metrolinx that works with local employers across the region to improve commuter options like carpooling, transit, cycling, walking and telework.  More than 75 employers with almost 200,000 employees have signed on to Smart Commute.  The program and its municipal partners were recently recognized with the national FCM-CH2M Hill Sustainable Community Award for Transportation.
