Keswick, Ontario – Smart Commute Central York (SCCY) is helping Georgina residents with their commute by promoting Keswick’s first carpool lot, owned by Metrus Properties, at the corner of Woodbine and Glenwoods Avenue. SCCY has installed billboards to encourage drivers to change their travel habits, save money and help the environment.
“Having an official carpool lot in Keswick is a great way to help commuters to use alternate and sustainable means of transportation,” explains SCCY Advisory Board Chair, Doug Peters. “The parking lot will help reduce the number of single occupant vehicles on the road, and therefore, reduce traffic congestion. It provides a safe place for carpoolers to park their cars, is open 24 hours every day of the week, and is free of charge.”
To help find a convenient commuting partner, interested carpoolers can visit SCCY’s free ride-matching service, www.carpoolzone.ca. Users can register and view suitable matches. Newly formed carpools can then use Keswick’s carpool lot to park their cars.
SCCY is a program of the Newmarket Chamber of Commerce with funding and support from Metrolinx, York Region and the Town of Newmarket. SCCY has helped commuters prevent 198,000 kg of greenhouse gas emissions by eliminating over 14,000 car trips since 2006.
SCCY is one of 10 offices in the GTHA, each supported by Metrolinx and area municipalities. More than 120 employers with 300,000 employees have signed on to the Smart Commute program. Metrolinx is a Crown agency of the Province of Ontario. For more information visit: www.metrolinx.com or www.parkitgeorgina.ca.
