Metrolinx celebrates Carpool Week with expanded carpool parking at GO Stations

Designated carpool spots now at 31 stations throughout the GTHA

TORONTO, Feb. 3, 2014 – Just in time for Carpool Week (February 3 to 9), Metrolinx’s Smart Commute announces continued expansion of its Carpool to GO Program with seven new designated parking areas for carpoolers at GO Transit stations across the GTHA. Carpooling to GO allows you to share the cost of driving and reduce parking hassles with convenient, designated parking, now available at a total of 31 stations.

“With seven new designated parking areas at Newmarket, Unionville, Centennial, Streetsville, Markham, Aurora, and Bronte GO stations we are expanding choices for people to get where they want to go,” said Bruce McCuaig, President and CEO of Metrolinx. “Every carpool has the potential to take at least one car off the road, which improves the efficiency of the network.”

Metrolinx’s Smart Commute makes it easy for commuters to find people to carpool with. CarpoolZone.ca is a free, online ride-matching service that facilitates connections between people with similar routes and schedules. Currently, CarpoolZone.ca has 1,500 registered carpools across the GTHA, which in 2013 alone, contributed to an average monthly reduction of 615,000 kilometres of car travel, and saved participants $398,900 in travel expenses.

Metrolinx is committed to promoting and supporting sustainable commuting options as part of The Big Move. Approximately 5 per cent of the budget of The Big Move’s Next Wave is planned to go to funding improvements to regional highways. Much of this investment would focus on improving the system of high occupancy vehicle lanes on provincial highways throughout the region, which would encourage carpooling and transit use, and enable more efficient movement of people, goods and vehicles.
